Tonight, standing outside the venerable Lincoln's Inn where I qualified as a barrister decades ago, I hosted clients from the Great Investments Programme.
As I guided our discussion under the gothic arches steeped in history, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey that brought me here.
In my 20s, I was a young barrister with a corner office at 7 Stone Buildings. It was in that very room, one late evening much like tonight, that I realised my passion lay not in the law that surrounded me but in the financial markets that beckoned me with their complexity and dynamism.
That moment marked the beginning of a pivotal shift in my career, from law to finance.
Over the years, my path has taken me through roles as a hedge fund manager, Bloomberg TV presenter, Financial Times columnist and author, to UK Government representative and more, and eventually to where I stand today—running a campaign to teach a million people how to add an extra million to their pensions over their lifetimes.
This isn’t just a career; it's a calling.
The pursuit of purpose and passion isn't linear. What matters to us in youth can transform dramatically as we age. My youthful fascination with the precision of law has matured into a profound commitment to empowering others through investing.
As we age, our definition of success evolves. It's no longer about personal accolades but how we can contribute to the greater good.
For me, the transition from barrister to investment guru wasn't just a career change; it was a transformation in understanding what I was truly passionate about—helping others achieve financial independence.
So, to those wondering if it’s too late to chase a new dream - it’s about finding what ignites your spirit and aligns with your evolving purpose.
Whether you're in the law, finance, or any other field, remember: the most fulfilling path is the one that resonates with your deepest passions and the impact you wish to make on the world.
Here's to finding and following your passion, no matter where you are in your journey - keep the fire burning.
