Verdict in one paragraph
Imagine setting up a three-ETF portfolio, telling the app to invest £500 on the first of every month, to keep the weights at 60/30/10, and to reinvest dividends, and then not paying the platform a penny for the next twenty years. That is InvestEngine's DIY service, and in our model it is the only platform whose true cost is £0 in every scenario. It ranks eighth rather than first because the cost score is only 30% of the total and InvestEngine is deliberately narrow: ETFs only, no shares, no funds, no interest on cash, no Junior or Lifetime ISA, and no US citizens. If a diversified ETF portfolio is your whole plan, it is the cheapest possible way to run it.

Who it is for
Passive investors who hold a handful of ETFs in an ISA, SIPP or general account and want automation rather than choice. Also a strong option for business owners: the Business Account lets a limited company invest surplus cash with the same zero fees.

Research and tools
Where InvestEngine earns its keep. Savings Plans automate contributions, AutoInvest deploys cash into your target weights, one-click Rebalance restores them, and the portfolio look-through shows your true regional, sector and holding exposure. There is no stock research because there are no stocks.
The catches
ETFs only. No Fundsmith, no individual shares, no gilts held directly.
No interest on cash. Uninvested money earns nothing, so keep it fully invested.
No US citizens, even UK-resident dual nationals.
No JISA or LISA.
Smaller company. A relatively young, privately owned firm still building scale.
Managed service is not free. 0.25% is competitive but it is the same order of magnitude as AJ Bell's platform fee.
Trust
InvestEngine (UK) Ltd is FCA-authorised with FSCS cover of £85,000. Trustpilot rates it around 4.6 to 4.7 on some 4,900 reviews. It is smaller and younger than the other nine, which is reflected in its trust score, but client assets are segregated in the normal way.
Pros and cons
Pros: truly zero fees for DIY; fractional ETF investing; best automation tools; SIPP and Business Account included; flexible ISA.
Cons: ETFs only; no interest on cash; no US citizens; no JISA or LISA; small company.
