Verdict in one paragraph
Think of someone who has decided, sensibly, that a single LifeStrategy 80 fund is all the investing they ever want to do. For that person Vanguard's own platform is a perfectly good home: 0.15% a year capped at £375, no dealing charges, no FX, no exit fees, and drawdown included in the SIPP. For everyone else it finishes last here, and the reasons are structural rather than a matter of quality. You can hold only Vanguard's own funds and ETFs. The tools are minimal. Cash interest is not published. The £4 monthly minimum means a £5,000 ISA pays 0.96% a year. And Vanguard UK is not available to US persons, which will surprise Americans who assume the name travels. Our model puts its true 20-year cost for a £100,000 SIPP at £11,254, the highest of the ten, because the cap does not help until you pass £250,000 and you cannot escape into cheaper ETF custody as you can at AJ Bell.

Who it is for
Investors committed to Vanguard funds, particularly LifeStrategy or Target Retirement, with between roughly £32,000 and £250,000, who want the simplest possible experience and never intend to buy anything else.

Where the maths turns
The £4 minimum is 0.96% on £5,000, 0.48% on £10,000 and 0.15% at £32,000. Above £250,000 the £375 cap means the rate falls again: 0.075% at £500,000. In between, 0.15% is competitive with AJ Bell's 0.25% for funds but far dearer than AJ Bell's £42 ETF cap, and dearer than InvestEngine's zero for the same Vanguard ETFs.
Accounts
Stocks and Shares ISA, Junior ISA, Personal Pension (SIPP) with drawdown at no extra charge, General Account, and Managed ISA and Managed Pension. No Lifetime ISA, no joint accounts.
Investment range
Vanguard's own range only: index trackers, LifeStrategy, Target Retirement, ETFs and a handful of active funds. No third-party funds, no individual shares, no investment trusts. That is the whole story and the reason for the score of 3 out of 10 here.
Research and tools
Educational content and a basic portfolio view. No screener, no research library, no analysis tools beyond what the funds themselves publish.
The catches
Vanguard only. You can buy the same ETFs at InvestEngine for nothing, or at AJ Bell for £42 a year, alongside everything else.
£4 minimum punishes small pots.
No US persons. Vanguard's eligibility pages state its accounts are not available to US persons; Americans are pointed to Vanguard's US business, which needs a US bank account.
Cash interest not published.
Service. Trustpilot reviews are broadly positive on the UK platform, but Vanguard's global reviews are dominated by complaints about wait times; check the UK-specific page.
Trust
Vanguard Asset Management Ltd is FCA-authorised and FSCS-covered, and the Vanguard Group is one of the two largest asset managers on earth with a unique mutual ownership structure in the US. The UK platform's Trustpilot page rates it Excellent on some 5,400 reviews. Financial strength is not in question.
Pros and cons
Pros: simple; 0.15% capped at £375; free fund and bulk ETF dealing; no FX; drawdown included; fee can be paid outside the pot. Cons: Vanguard products only; £4 minimum; minimal tools; cash interest not published; no US persons; no LISA.
Frequently asked questions
What does Vanguard UK charge?
£4 a month if you have under £32,000 invested, otherwise 0.15% a year capped at £375, plus the fund costs (0.06% to 0.79%).
Can I buy non-Vanguard funds on Vanguard UK? No. Only Vanguard funds and ETFs.
Is InvestEngine cheaper than Vanguard for Vanguard ETFs? Yes. InvestEngine charges no platform fee and holds Vanguard ETFs alongside other issuers. Vanguard's platform is the only place to hold Vanguard's OEIC funds such as LifeStrategy without a third-party platform fee, however.
